Holiday Organizing Tips: Simplify and Enjoy the Season

The holidays are a busy and exciting time of year, but they can also bring a lot of stress if we’re not careful. Don’t let the chaos overshadow the joy and activities that matter most to you!

To truly savor the holidays, start with some thoughtful organizing. Here are our top tips for staying organized this holiday season:

Holiday Organizing Tip #1: Purge, Purge, Purge

As you unpack your holiday decorations this year, take note of items you no longer use or love. If there are decorations you haven’t displayed in years, consider donating them. Many organizations are eager to collect holiday décor for families who need them. By blessing someone else with these items, you’ll lighten your own load and make the post-holiday cleanup easier.

Of course, if there are any items that are broken or worn-out, be sure to toss them. There’s no reason to hold onto items that no longer serve their purpose well.

Holiday Organizing Tip #2: Store Smarter

Invest in clear, labeled bins with sturdy handles that clasp to store your holiday decorations. Group similar items together—lights, ornaments, wreaths—and clearly label them so you can quickly know what’s inside. Bonus tip: pack your bins strategically. Place the items you’ll need first (like outdoor lights) on top, and those needed last (like tree toppers) at the bottom.

For wreaths, consider a dedicated wreath box or, if you have the space, hang them on a wall in your storage area. These small steps make next year’s setup a breeze.

Holiday Organizing Tip #3: Organize Wrapping Supplies

One of our favorite solutions for keeping gift wrap and supplies in order is the Elfa Gift Wrap Cart. It’s perfect for organizing wrapping paper, bows, ribbons, and gift bags—not just during the holidays, but all year round. We love using the drawers to separate wrapping supplies by occasion. While you’re at it, go through your collection of gift bags. Keep only the good ones and recycle the rest.

Holiday Organizing Tip #4: Tidy Up Toys

For families with kids, now is a great time to purge toys your children have outgrown or no longer play with. Donate gently used items to families in need, and discard games or toys with broken or missing pieces. By decluttering now, you’ll kick off the new year in a great space with a more organized home.

Holiday Organizing Tip #5: Consider Experience Gifts

Instead of adding more “stuff” to your home, think about giving experience gifts.

  • Does your child love sports or theater? Gift tickets to a game or a show.

  • Maybe book a weekend getaway!

  • Or give the gift of organization by getting a gift card with Serenity At Home (email juliana@serenityathome.org)

Experiences create lasting memories and reduce clutter, making them a win-win.

Most Importantly: Enjoy the Season!

Focus on spending time with loved ones and doing what makes you happy. When you clear out the unnecessary, it’s easier to fill your time with meaningful activities that bring you joy.

By starting the holidays with a little decluttering and organization, you’ll create a season that’s less stressful and more enjoyable. Happy organizing, and happy holidays!
